A PC-controlled vacuum heat treating system was used to austemper an alloyed ductile iron with 0.77%Cu and 0.5%Ni at 400°C after austenitizing at 850°C. During the progress of isothermal transformation, the resistivity of austempered ductile iron vs. time was recorded and then analyzed to determine the processing window.

A computer model has been developed to predict the processing window (austempering window) for austempered ductile iron (ADI). The model is a modification of an existing model for the isothermal decomposition of austenite in bainitic steels. It was calibrated using experimental data from the literature.
Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI) is well known for its outstanding engineering.. or processing window for the microalloyed ductile iron alloys V and N with... Read more Carbon Concentration of Austenite in Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI)
Model for Prediction of Processing Window for Austempered Ductile Iron. / Zahiri, Saden H; Pereloma, Elena V; Davies, C H J. In: Materials Science and Technology, Vol. 18, No. 10, 2002, p. 1163 - 1167. Research output: Contribution to journal Article Research peer-review
A model is developed for simultaneous prediction of the processing window and the hardenability (austemperability) of austempered ductile iron (ADI). A bainitic model for steels is calibrated for the upper and lower limits of the processing window according to experimental data from the literature.

In Austempered Ductile Iron and Austempered Gray Iron, the structure is Ausferrite while Bainite forms in steel. Austempering is an isothermal heat treatment that, when applied to ferrous materials, produces a structure that is stronger and tougher than comparable structures produced with
