Stamp mills are used by miners to crush valuable ore and extract the metals within them. Gold, silver, and copper are common metals that are found within ore, and stamp mills allow these metals to be released from rock for further processing and refining.
A stamp mill consists of a set of heavy steel (iron-shod wood in some cases) stamps, loosely held vertically in a frame, in which the stamps can slide up and down. They are lifted by cams on a horizontal rotating shaft. As the cam moves from under the stamp, the stamp falls onto the ore below, crushing the rock, and the lifting process is repeated at the next pass of the cam.

The original 40-stamp Mammoth Pan Mill was built in 1878-79 outside of Mammoth Lakes, California. It was only used during Mammoth's brief gold mining boom and abandoned in the early 1880s. It lay derelict until it was burnt by the U.S. Forest Service in 1929, a short time after this hand-colored photo (now in the Gene Autry Museum) was made.
When stamp mills are used for dry crushing, double discharge mortars are provided (see Fig. 50), and the screens are put low down, giving a small depth of discharge. These arrangements are necessitated by the difficulty of discharging the crushed ore from the mortar, the only means of doing this being the dashing of the dry ore against the screens, due to the fall of the stamps. How Stamp Mills Work: A stamp mill is a large mechanical device used to crush ore and extract the desired metals from rock the host material. It uses heavy steel stamps to pound and break apart rock, releasing the valuable metals from worthless rock, allowing for the extraction of gold
The Golden Gate Mill is a neat site and fairly easy to get to. The ten stamp mill got its ore from a 2,300 ft tramway which ran up to the mine. The gold mine was discovered in 1898 but wasnt worked until around 1902 and probably peaked in 1913. Apparently, the mill and buildings were destroyed a couple of times by avalanches. Once in 1907 and twice in 1911!
In 2006, we took a side trip to check out the remains of a hidden 10 stamp and cyanide mill. The mine and mill were worked around 1915. There isnt that much left of the mill
The stamp battery is the heart of a stamp mill and the mechanical separation process to break the various components of the ore apart, freeing the gold from its enclosing material. To start, the mined rock enters the mill and passes over a grizzly (like a grate- kit# M1 ) that has bars spaced to allow rocks that the stamp battery can handle to drop through.
13-06-2016· Stamp mills accelerated ore processing at mining sites throughout the empire, while sawmills allowed for marble and other stones to be cut precisely and at record speeds. Roman milling technology progressed from manual to animal-driven rotary mills in the 1st century BCE, and then to the more complex water-powered and crank activated sawmills of the 3rd century CE.
